How to set an investment horizon: write down how long and why

Every can has a best-before date. Every investment should have your own: the Horizon, the H in HOLD.

A horizon is not a market forecast. It is how long you plan to hold and why. Without one, news or a limited-time offer can steer you.

Watch the one-minute short: H · Horizon

How to write one

  1. Write a specific time, such as "five years", not "long term".
  2. Write the reason, such as "down payment" or "retirement".
  3. Write a review date, and check then whether the reason still holds.
  4. If you need the money within a few years, be careful about price swings. The shorter the horizon, the more flexibility to keep.

A look at history: how long a fall took to recover

In the S&P 500 scenarios used in the junjun.life stress test, the 2007–09 financial crisis fell about 57% from peak to bottom over about 1.4 years, then took about 4 more years to return to the earlier high (price index, dividends excluded). A very short horizon may not leave time to wait.

This is a historical scenario and not a guarantee about the future.

RULE CARDBefore you buy, write how long you will hold.

FAQ

Must a horizon be long?

No. It should match what the money is for, and you should write down the reason.

Can I change it later?

Yes, but do it on review day by checking your original reason, and record why you changed it.
